I was talking to a lady today from Vulcan Alberta. She lives on a farm outside town that is totally off the grid. The problems that they have been encountering through their journey has been been tremendous.
When they purchased the farm 6 1/2 years ago the decided that they would be build their home in such away that the they would be off thje grid. A solar and wind system is the way that they decided to go with to produce all the electricity for their needs. One of the first problems that they encountered was with the backup generator they had purchased to charge their 24 batteries. The generator would not charge the batteries properly. The life of the batteries was shortened considerably. They finally found a generator that would work, it only took a little over a year.
The problem with the wind turbines they found is that the wind high wind gusts started damaging the equipment and causing equipment failures. The solar energy system works using batteries as a backup. With batteries that are not being able to take a charge charged this is a problem. The generator now has to work every evening because there is no storage of electricity.
Aftyer 6 1/2 years they have to do repairs as well as replace their 24 storage batteries that have not been usable for storage for the past 6 years.
These solar and wind systems do experience technical problems especially with the older technologies. Today the newer technologies are more efficient and trouble free but with mechanical devices there always a wear factor and at some point in time there will be a physical problem develop and repairs will be needed.
I just wanted to let you all know out there that there could be technical problems involved with the practical use of alternative energy systems.
